One Year Certification Program 2022

From Separation Sensitivity* (Powell, Hoffman et al 2014) to Borderline Personality Disorder

A Self, Attachment theory, Object relations and Neurobiological approach.
*Hoffman, Powell et al (2014)

How does one work with those patients who present with “separation sensitivity” or with the more engrained borderline disorder of self? Is it possible to help patients with a borderline personality disorder achieve a sense of real self which feels both whole and secure?

This one year program will provide a solid foundation for clinicians who wish to develop both understanding and expertise in this area. DSM III, IV and V approach the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder through a description of the patient’s symptoms and behaviour. This approach has certain strengths but one of the major limitations is the lack of developmental perspective which is essential for those clinicians who wish to develop both understanding and expertise in working with these patients.

This one year certification program will provide a foundation for clinicians to develop the skills to treat the broad range of patients whose presentations range from “the separation sensitive” to the more engrained borderline personality disorder.

How does the Online Training work?

The online training uses high quality audio and visual computer technology which enables our US based faculty to teach and interact face to face with students coming from Australia, New Zealand and SE Asia. Seminars are arranged outside normal workplace hours for approximately three hours per week. Students are placed in small groups where they can see and hear each other in order to facilitate group learning and discussion. The weekly case conference, guided by one of our senior faculty, provides “hands on” instruction in differential diagnosis and clinical intervention.

This approach to the teaching of higher level clinical skills has been successfully used in South Africa, the USA and parts of Europe because we provide:

  • High quality audio/visual technology to enhance face to face contact
  • Small seminar groups ensure active discussion and group learning
  • Specialist input from clinicians who have taught in the field for thirty years
  • Faculty who have trained with pioneers in the field of disorders of self
  • A sophisticated integration of Self, Object Relations and Attachment theory
  • Integrated with the latest findings from Neurobiology.
